According to KTUU TV:
"Lawmakers in Juneau are starting to talk about banning cell phone use for drivers in Alaska.
Nearly everyone these days owns a cell phone and it seems just as many people have an opinion about how Alaskans should be using them.
The House Transportation Committee took on the issue Tuesday.
The bill is very simply worded. It's a single page that could change a lot of drivers' habits.
Ask any driver or pedestrian about their close call.
"I just passed a truck, a huge truck with a girl talking on her cell phone," said driver Joanne Bietka.
"I've almost been hit so many times by people in big SUVs not looking and yelling on their phones," said Amanda Cash.
"That's why you have so many accidents I think," said Dave Gonzales.
House Bill 257 would prohibit cell phone use while driving in Alaska.
The only exception would be for emergency phone calls to police or the fire department.
It would also prohibit hands-free devices.
"The dysfunction is in the brain and not in the hands," says Rep. Mike Doogan, D-Anchorage."
Many existing state laws allow for the use of cell phones with a hands-free device, but this would be a more restrictive regulation.
